Cancellation of paper stamps in Syria soon

Finance Minister Mamoun Hamdan stressed that work is being done to cancel paper stamps soon, as they cost large sums, and will be replaced by electronic labels in government transactions.

Hamdan's words came during a meeting held on Tuesday in the "Presidency of the Council of Ministers" to address the file of tax accumulation, adding that the time has come to resolve and correct the issue of taxes, especially since the current tax policy is old and needs to be modernized.

In turn, Prime Minister Imad Khamis stressed "the presence of accumulated tax files and names for businessmen, which confirms the existence of those who protect them, and this is definitely unacceptable, and we do not accept discussion in it, because the tax reference should be real, fair and far from favoritism."

At the end of October 2019, the Prime Minister approved the formation of an inspection committee, to discuss the causes of unpaid tax accumulation for senior taxpayers in various governorates, and to address and account for the neglected, and collect the state's dues.

Munther and Nous, director of the General Authority for Taxes and Fees, said that there will be no new taxes. Rather, work will be taken to discuss developing the authority's work and tools, activating its role in achieving tax justice, and achieving full tax accumulation during the current year.

In August 2018, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates announced the entry of the electronic stamp project into effect, which will replace the paper stamps, in order to collect the consular fees for Syrian missions and consulates abroad, which was initially from the Syrian embassy in Lebanon.

The project contributes to reducing expenditures related to the printing and distribution of stamps, as well as having high security specifications and prevents counterfeiting, according to what was previously mentioned by an official source in the Ministry of Finance to the Economist.

The "Syrian Electronic Payments Company" affiliated with the "Ministry of Communications and Technology" undertakes the implementation of the e-government system, especially with regard to bills and fees, by linking between public agencies on the one hand, and then linking them with government and private banks on the other hand.
