Handing over Huaweis manager to Washington at Canadas tip

The trial session for the decision to deport Ming, who was arrested in late 2018, is scheduled to start on January 20 in a Vancouver court.

The session is devoted to the discussion of the issue of "dual criminality". In order for Ming and Wanzhou to be extradited to the United States, it must be prosecuted on charges that are also provided for under Canadian law.

The United States accuses the Huawei's chief financial officer of violating the ban on Iran by lying to HSBC about Huawei's relationship with Skycom, a branch of Huawei, which sells telecom equipment in Tehran.

Ming's lawyers are of the opinion that their client should not be deported to the United States, because the charge of breaching sanctions against Tehran is not a crime in Canada where these sanctions do not exist.

In his report, which he submitted Friday to the Vancouver Court, and was published by many media outlets, the Attorney General of Canada considered that, on the contrary, the process of lying attributed to Ming was "in essence" fraud, a crime stipulated in the Canadian Penal Code.

Huawei's chief financial officer, who is under house arrest in one of her two Vancouver homes, denies the US charges. Her lawyers say that the Canadian authorities violated her rights upon arrest.

The arrest of Wanzhou on December 1, 2018 at Vancouver Airport, sparked an unprecedented diplomatic crisis between Ottawa and Beijing, which requested her immediate release.
