Jordanian protests against the restriction of goods entering from Syria

Ramtha brigade in Irbid governorate witnessed on Sunday evening protests by the drivers of travel cars (sailors), in protest against the recent government decisions regarding the prevention of the entry of some goods from Syria.

The protesters said that the government did not commit to relaxing the inspection procedures inside the Jaber border post as it had promised, nor did it meet many of the demands they had handed to the interior minister recently, according to Jordanian media, including Ruya.

The sailors pointed out that the complex inspection procedures cause sabotage of their vehicles, and lead to delays within the border center, stressing that they have become Mahdi Bmsthm living.

Last September, Jordan decided to ban the entry or exit of smoke from Jordan into Syria and vice versa through the Nasib-Jaber border crossing, almost a month after an earlier decision to limit the amount of cigarettes a passenger can enter through border crossings.

The Jordanian Council of Ministers decided on August 25, 2019 to prevent the entry of more than one smoke cruise with each passenger through the sea, air and land border crossings, specifically the Jaber-Naseeb border crossing with Syria, and the decision caused popular protests in the city of Ramtha.

The decision aims to curb the smuggling of cigarettes, which has increased recently, which has affected the competition in the local market, it was decided to consider any quantity more than one cruise smuggling, and apply the legal procedures against violators, including booking the car, according to Jordanian sites.

On October 15, 2018, the Syrian and Jordanian governments opened the Nasib border crossing, ending their nearly three-year closure due to the Syrian crisis.

Seafarers rely on transporting goods from neighboring countries for sale in the Jordanian domestic market, taking advantage of the price difference between Jordan and neighboring countries, which provides them with a profit margin.

According to a number of sailors (cargo carriers on the border between Ramtha and Daraa), smuggling of foreign cigarettes is no longer as effective as before the Syrian crisis, given the high prices of smoke in Syria.

The Jordanian Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply recently approved the ban on importing about 194 commodities from Syria and justified the decision at the time that it was an application of the principle of reciprocity, and began its implementation in early May 2019.
