Syrian Chambers of Industry and ILO Discuss Wage Standards and Decent Work
The Damascus and Rural Damascus Chamber of Industry hosted a focus group discussion organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO), focusing on promoting decent work and pay equity. The session was attended by Dr. Mazen Dierwan, Chairman of the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Industry, and Eng. Muhammad Ayman Al-Moulawi, Chairman of the Damascus and Rural Damascus Chamber of Industry, along with board members and representatives from the chambers of commerce, agriculture, and tourism.
Consultant Dr. Rasha Serop provided an overview of ILO Conventions No. 100 and No. 131 regarding minimum wage fixing and equal remuneration for work of equal value. The session also covered the ILO's efforts to build a knowledge base for reforming the current wage system and strengthening tripartite social dialogue between the government, employers, and workers.
Discussions addressed wage calculation mechanisms, increments, and the impact of social security contributions on production costs and competitiveness. Employers' representatives emphasized that wages are determined by supply and demand, skills, and economic factors, warning that an excessive minimum wage could negatively impact the private sector and increase unemployment. They also called for reducing social security rates to encourage full compliance. The meeting concluded with Dr. Serop announcing a survey to collect accurate data on wages and their impact on production costs across all sectors
