At least 12 people were killed, on Saturday, on a boat that sank in the Ionian Sea, the Greek authorities said.
The Greek Coast Guard said that 21 others were rescued from the boat, noting that "the search and rescue operation is continuing." According to Agence France-Presse.
The Greek authorities explained that the boat, which was carrying about 50 migrants, sank off an island in western Greece.
The Greek Coast Guard added that helicopters and ships are conducting a search operation in the area southwest of Pakse Island, in the Ionian Sea, in search of more survivors.
Reports indicated that the boat, which carries unidentified migrants, was submerged near Paxi Island, apparently while trying to reach Italy.
The Greek Coast Guard said that 4 cargo ships were passing from the place provided assistance in rescuing the migrants and the sunken boat.
It is noteworthy that thousands of migrants and refugees have been killed in recent years while trying to cross the Mediterranean in small boats and carrying people exceeding their capacity.
The International Organization for Migration previously reported that 22 people were killed or are still missing as a result of migrant boats sank in the Mediterranean this month, while the Greek Coast Guard said that 73 people were rescued in separate incidents in the Aegean Sea on Friday and Saturday.
