A new economic study estimated that the cost of living for a family of five people during the next year will reach 480 thousand Syrian pounds, meaning that the average monthly wage of 60 thousand pounds per employee will cover only 12% of them.
The study recorded that the cost of living (of basic needs) in Damascus reached a new record during the third quarter of 2019, reaching an average of 359 thousand Syrian pounds per month, for a family of 5 people
Inflation (average prices of goods and services) rose in January this year by 826 percent, or 8.25 times that of January 2010, the base year, according to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics.
According to the data of the Office of Statistics, inflation rose last January 4.8% year on year compared with January 2018, while increased 1.8% on a monthly basis, compared with December 2018.
The Central Bureau of Statistics measures changes in the price of goods and services distributed among 13 basic groups: food and non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages and tobacco, clothing and footwear, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels.
Also included are home appliances, regular home maintenance, health, transportation, communications, recreation and culture, education, restaurants, miscellaneous goods and services, and recreation and non-profit culture.
The bureau recently revealed that inflation had fallen last year compared to 2017.``If the dollar had not appreciated against the lira in the last quarter of 2018 and the fuel crisis would have been negative, all prices would have fallen compared to 2017, '' he said.
