Harran columns .. The beauty of monuments and architectural monumental ancient

The town of Harran Al-Awamid belongs to the countryside of Damascus, about 30 km east of Damascus and is 600 meters above sea level. It is registered with the Department of Antiquities of Damascus and registered in the list of national archaeological sites.
It took its name from the huge and high archaeological pillars that stand in its center and indicate the architectural remains and ancient monuments scattered in the town and its surroundings according to the studies of the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums on the great prosperity during ancient times, especially during the Roman and then Byzantine periods. The buildings built in the Damascus area during the Roman era and in the National Museum of Damascus, there are many carved stone pieces that may have been part of it and dates back to the late Roman period and probably built during the reign of Emperor Philip This is evidenced by the pattern of the decoration of the capitals of the columns, their bases, lintels and stone carvings. It was built on a high platform paved with basalt stone carved tiles, and three huge columns that formed part of the front foyer rested on huge bases. Ionic-style crowns, and from the Roman monuments in the town to the «water channel» parts of which were carved in the rock, in addition to a group of burials and tombs from which many of the foundations, statues and tombs were extracted, and during the Byzantine era the town remained prosperous Vachid west of the temple Monastery or a church during the Islamic era turned into a mosque, but still a lot of stone carvings removed from the temple adorn the walls and the facades of the mosque and the walls of the old town houses.
