The social networking site "Twitter", caught on Saturday, with tweets that reflected feelings of sadness and sorrow for the death of the Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Saeed, on Friday evening, at the age of 79.
The hashtag "Qaboos, under God's protection," topped the list of the most popular "tags" on Twitter.
Large numbers of Twitter users tweeted, using the hashtag, and mentioning the virtues of the late Sultan, who had ruled Oman since he took power in 1970.
Users also posted photos and videos highlighting Sultan Qaboos' accomplishments, while others preferred to keep "Twitter" users informed of the latest developments and news related to the selection of the Sultan's successor.
On Saturday, Omani official television announced the inauguration of Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Sultan of Oman, to succeed Sultan Qaboos.
On Saturday, a session was held to open the will of Sultan Qaboos, in the presence of a number of senior officials and members of the royal family, and stipulated that Haitham bin Tariq Al Said be named Sultan of Oman, according to the official Oman News Agency in its official account on Twitter.
The Royal Family Council entrusted the Defense Council to open the will, as stipulated in Article Six of the Basic Law of the State, and to take measures to confirm those recommended by His Majesty the Sultan in coordination with the Royal Family Council.
The President of the Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ordered that mourning be declared to Sultan Qaboos for a period of 3 days, starting from Saturday, and flags at which all official departments within the country, its embassies and diplomatic missions abroad should be flown at half-mast.
The Vice President of the UAE, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, also offered condolences to the Omani people on the death of Sultan Qaboos.
